Mini Landscape Project

I told you we moved into a new house recently and that things are in a “work in progress” state.  Well, the dirt lining our walk way was getting a bit depressing.  Landscaping is something that is a little lower on our “to-do” list, but this little area got bumped up, hence the mini landscape project.

This summer, went from living in an adorable 100-year-old Sears home with a serious farmhouse vibe that was surrounded by HUGE trees, to living in a brand new house in a new development.  There are definitely things we miss about our first house, but I’m loving the “newness” of this new home! It’s the little things that get me, like outlets! Outlets everywhere! We’ve realized we can still have our beloved modern, farmhouse vibe in the new house, we’re just going to have to work a little harder for it!  We’re going to have to slowly add the things we took for granted with our old house, like plants 😉

So this little project started at Lowes, we picked out the plants we could agree on and hurried home.  It sounded like it would be easy enough, we only had 4 plants to get in the ground.  My husband and daughter couldn’t wait to get started, so outside they went to start digging!

Clay, clay, everywhere.

Holy cow, we don’t have soil, we have CLAY.  The clay sticks to everything.  So picture my daughter playing in clay while my husband is digging holes with shoes caked in the stuff.  And my little one kept calling the clay “play”.

“Why do we have play, Mama? I like play!” as she’s squashing it in her hands  it was too cute to correct her.

Anyway, we finally got the plants in the ground without any major set backs, narrowly missing a buried electrical wire, whew.

The last step was adding some river rock we picked up from a local nursery.

All done! And we did it for around $60!  It’s very simple, which is what we wanted.  After 4 years of ripping up ivy and other unwanted vegetation at the old house, we wanted something that required very little up keep.  Take a look at the after photos and tell me what you think!
