Easy Over-the-Bed Guest Room Decor

I’m going to walk you through how I made a super cheap and easy over-the-bed decor using a tree branch.  Let me start out by saying, there are three components to the perfect DIY project:

Easy, inexpensive and quick.

Am I right? Yes, I am. 😉

I needed something to put over the guest bed.  We’ve made a lot of costly purchases since moving and I’m not ready to spring for a headboard in guest room just yet.  The room looked empty, bare and uninviting.  I knew I had to come up with a creative décor to dress up the bedroom.  I love working with natural elements, greenery, stones, branches are all on my favorites list.  The only bad thing is this new neighborhood is limited in the tree department, so branches aren’t as readily available as I’m used to.

Find your branch

Last week, we went for a walk in our old neighborhood which has a grand canopy of mature trees lining the streets.  I felt like I hit the jackpot when I found a pile of branches on the side of the road (I used to be the one wishing someone would come take all the fallen branches littering my yard).  I wasn’t sure what they were for yet, but I knew I could use them!

Find your sign

I happened to find this cute chalk board sign at Michaels.  It happened to be on sale for $5 in the Make Market section! I love that it already had a string to hang it but it also had hanging hooks on the back.

Assemble

I just treaded the chalkboard to the center of the stick.  Easiest assembly ever. If your chalkboard doesn’t already have string, you’ll have to attach that.  Prep the chalk board by rubbing a layer of chalk on it, wipe it clean and write what you like!

Hang decor

I love using the Command hooks when possible.  Follow the instructions on the back of the package to hang the strips, one on each end and I also tried to do one in the center to help support the weight of the sign, but the center of the branch wasn’t flush with the wall.  I decided to hang the sign with nails by the hooks on the back, this way I could ensure the branch wouldn’t snap in the center from the weight of the sign.

This project cost well under $10 to make, and it took well under an hour to put it together.  I love the simplicity of it and I think I helps pull the room together. Finally, I love any decor project that makes a big impact with little effort!
